TÜSEB Approves Project on Porous Magnesium Biomaterials for Biodegradable Orthopaedic Implants

A research project entitled “Evaluation of the Performance of Electrochemically Oxidized Coated Porous Magnesium Biomaterials under Physiological Conditions and Static Loading, and the Establishment of a Pre-Validation Platform for Orthopedic Implant Development” has been approved for funding by the Health Institutes of Türkiye (TÜSEB).

Led by Dr. Berzah Yavuzyeğit as principal investigator, the project will focus on producing non-porous and controlled-porosity Mg–Ca–Zn-based specimens and applying phosphate–fluoride-based electrochemical oxidation (ECO) coatings. Both coated and uncoated specimens will undergo detailed material characterisation, degradation testing under physiological conditions, and performance evaluation under static mechanical loading.

By combining controlled porous architectures, surface modification and mechanical assessment, the project aims to establish a pre-validation platform that will support the future development of biodegradable magnesium-based orthopaedic implants.

The project team includes Dr. Ayhan Hacıoğlu, Dr. Nigel Smith and Prof. Gordon Blunn, whose expertise will contribute to the scientific and technical development of the study. B. Sercan Bayram also provided valuable conceptual support, particularly regarding the specimen production stage.

The project is expected to generate meaningful scientific outcomes in the fields of biodegradable metallic biomaterials, surface engineering and orthopaedic implant technologies.
